Herman van Kogelenberg

PRINCIPAL FLUTE - MÜNCHNER PHILHARMONIKER

‍Herman ‍van ‍Kogelenberg ‍has been ‍principal ‍flutist ‍of ‍the ‍Munich ‍Philharmonic Orchestra since 2013.


Whilst ‍studying, ‍Mr. van Kogelenberg ‍was ‍appointed ‍principal ‍flute ‍with ‍the ‍Orchestre ‍Philharmonique ‍Royal ‍de ‍Liège ‍in ‍1999. ‍From ‍2003 ‍till ‍2010 ‍he ‍was ‍flutist ‍with ‍the ‍Royal ‍Concertgebouw ‍Orchestra ‍Amsterdam. ‍An ‍invitation ‍from ‍the ‍Rotterdam ‍Philharmonic ‍Orchestra ‍and ‍their ‍musical ‍director ‍Yannick ‍Nézet-Séguin ‍to ‍become ‍their ‍principal ‍flute ‍led ‍to ‍Rotterdam ‍in ‍2010, ‍and ‍in ‍September ‍2013 ‍he ‍was ‍appointed ‍principal ‍flutist ‍of ‍the ‍Münchner ‍Philharmoniker ‍under ‍Lorin ‍Maazel. ‍

‍Since ‍2017 ‍he ‍is ‍also ‍solo ‍flutist ‍of ‍Orchestra ‍Mozart, ‍founded ‍by ‍Claudio ‍Abbado.

‍As a guest principal Herman appears regularly with ‍the ‍Berliner ‍Philharmoniker, ‍the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Symphony ‍Orchestra ‍of ‍the ‍Bavarian ‍Radio, ‍Lucerne ‍Festival ‍Orchestra ‍and ‍the ‍Chamber ‍Orchestra ‍of ‍Europe, among others.

‍Herman van Kogelenberg began learning the flute at an early age with Willem Tonnaer and continued his studies at the conservatories of Amsterdam, Utrecht, and The Hague, where he studied with Abbie de Quant and Emily Beynon.

Herman ‍van ‍Kogelenberg ‍regularly ‍appears ‍as ‍a ‍soloist, ‍chamber ‍musician ‍and ‍orchestra ‍player ‍in ‍festivals ‍worldwide ‍and ‍is ‍a ‍founder ‍member ‍of ‍the ‍Farkas ‍Quintet ‍Amsterdam ‍since ‍1997. ‍The ‍Farkas ‍Quintet ‍Amsterdam ‍is ‍regarded ‍as ‍Netherlands’ ‍premier ‍woodwind ‍quintet ‍and ‍toured ‍extensively ‍throughout ‍the ‍Netherlands ‍and ‍Europe. ‍Recent ‍cd ‍releases ‍of ‍this ‍ensemble ‍include ‍french ‍repertoire, ‍Haydn ‍Seven ‍Last ‍Words ‍and ‍the ‍world’s ‍first ‍live ‍recording ‍of ‍the ‍Arnold ‍Schönberg ‍Wind ‍Quintet ‍opus ‍26.

A ‍passionate ‍and ‍dedicated ‍teacher, ‍Mr. van ‍Kogelenberg ‍is ‍regularly ‍invited ‍to ‍give ‍masterclasses ‍in ‍Europe, ‍USA, ‍South ‍America ‍and ‍Asia. ‍As ‍faculty ‍member ‍at ‍the ‍Pacific ‍Music ‍Festival ‍Japan; ‍at ‍the ‍Manhattan ‍School ‍of ‍Music ‍New ‍York, ‍the ‍University ‍of ‍California ‍Los ‍Angeles, ‍Shanghai ‍Conservatory ‍of ‍Music; ‍Munich, ‍Basel, ‍Bern ‍and ‍Geneva ‍conservatories, ‍Kobe ‍University, ‍or ‍in ‍Tokyo, ‍Seoul, ‍Taiwan ‍and ‍Brasil. ‍

Between ‍2007 ‍and ‍2010 ‍Herman ‍van ‍Kogelenberg ‍was ‍professor ‍at ‍the ‍Royal ‍Conservatory ‍of ‍The ‍Hague ‍and ‍from ‍2010 ‍till ‍2013 ‍at ‍the ‍Rotterdam ‍Conservatory ‍Codarts.  ‍
